Hot-Dip
Galvanizing
Zinc-bonded corrosion protection for structural and miscellaneous steel — managed from spec through certified delivery.
Corrosion Protection
That Outlasts the Structure
Hot-dip galvanizing isn't a coating applied on top of steel — it's a metallurgical bond. When steel is immersed in molten zinc, a series of zinc-iron alloy layers form, creating protection that can't peel, chip, or delaminate.
We manage the galvanizing scope the same way we manage every other Division 5 scope — coordinating the fabricator, the galvanizer, and the delivery schedule so the steel arrives on time and to spec.
What We Manage
- Galvanizing spec review and ASTM A123 compliance
- Fabricator-to-galvanizer coordination and scheduling
- Vent hole and drain hole design review
- Coating thickness inspection and documentation
- Touch-up specification for field welds (ASTM A780)
- Duplex system coordination (galvanize + topcoat)
- Delivery sequencing to match erection schedule
Why Specify Galvanizing
For exposed structural steel, bridges, industrial platforms, and exterior miscellaneous steel, galvanizing is often the most durable and cost-effective long-term solution.
Decades of Corrosion Protection
Hot-dip galvanizing bonds zinc metallurgically to steel, providing 50–100+ years of corrosion protection in most environments — far outlasting paint systems alone.
No Cure Time, No Field Touch-Up
Galvanized steel arrives job-ready. No waiting on paint cure windows, no field touch-up crews, no weather delays holding up erection.
Lower Lifecycle Cost
Higher upfront than paint, but galvanizing eliminates recoating cycles over the life of the structure — reducing total cost of ownership significantly.
Sustainable & Recyclable
Zinc is 100% recyclable. Galvanized steel can be fully reclaimed at end of life, supporting LEED and sustainability goals on your project.
The Galvanizing Process
Understanding the process helps us manage it. Here's what happens from fabrication shop to job site.
01
Surface Preparation
Steel is degreased, pickled in acid, and fluxed to remove all mill scale, rust, and contaminants — ensuring full zinc adhesion.
02
Immersion in Zinc Bath
Clean steel is submerged in a bath of molten zinc at approximately 840°F. Zinc reacts with the steel surface to form a series of zinc-iron alloy layers.
03
Withdrawal & Cooling
Steel is withdrawn and the outer layer solidifies into pure zinc — creating the bright, spangled finish characteristic of hot-dip galvanizing.
04
Inspection & Delivery
Coating thickness is verified to ASTM A123 standards. Material is staged and delivered to your project site on your schedule.
Standards &
Specifications
We manage galvanizing to the applicable ASTM standards and coordinate spec compliance between your engineer of record, the fabricator, and the galvanizer.
- ASTM A123 — Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel Products
- ASTM A153 — Zinc Coating on Iron and Steel Hardware
- ASTM A385 — Practice for Providing High-Quality Zinc Coatings
- Minimum coating thickness: 3.9 mils (99 µm) for structural shapes ≥ ¼" thick
- Compatible with duplex systems (galvanize + topcoat) for enhanced aesthetics or chemical resistance
